One night in 1912, the prosperous Birling family is celebrating their daughter’s engagement with a small dinner party in the British industrial city of Brumley. Following dinner, the family is visited by Inspector Goole, a policeman who questions each member of the family in turn about the death of a young working-class woman. The inspector’s relentless search for answers threatens to destroy the family’s public reputation and undermines the relationships they once held dear.

Mrs. Birling is lead to say that she feels that the young man who made the woman pregnant should be held responsible. Little does she know the man is actually her son Eric, who at that moment returns. |

Mr. Birling and Eric get into a tussle over his waywardness. |
|
Sheila tries to reason with her parents. |
|
She has had quite a change of heart about her place in the world. |
|
Prior to his departure, the Inspector warns everyone that they live in a world with other people and that what they do matters. |
|
Though everyone, except Sheila and Eric, try to play off the Inspector's admonishment, a final phone call changes everything. |
